The Supported Adult Learning (SAL) classroom (former SARAW) is an adult literacy setting that supports the development of   basic reading, writing and math to adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities. Reporting to both the Program Coordinator and the Instructor of the Adult Literacy and Essential Skills Research Institute, this position will support the Supported Adult Learning classroom’ learners and community support staff. This position will have a close relationship to the Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) courses especially with respect to learner pathways, reporting and accountability.

Responsibilities:

Develop and deliver customized learning services for students with disabilities individually or in groups

  • Assesses student needs using formative and summative assessments Designs individual learning plans in partnership with learners and community support workers to identify strategies that focus on the students’ unique strengths and maximize learning opportunities.
  • Implements specific strategies in partnership with the community support workers and students.
  • Promotes student independence of action and use of strategies and technology.
  • Collaborates with other Bow Valley College staff and faculty to promote student success.
  • Assesses, demonstrates, models and makes technology learning strategy recommendations based on the students' strengths.
  • Ensure that the Supported Adult Learning classroom is delivered to best meet the learning needs of adults registered in the program.
  • Provide telephone, email and walk-in information to referring agencies and potential literacy learners.
  • Follows strict guidelines for sharing highly confidential information with faculty and other service providers.
  • Provide one to one support to learners facilitating literacy skills identified in learning plan.
  • Reviews learner progress (mid-point and end of semester) against the goals and accomplishments.
  • Prepares and updates content related to learning strategies for learners.
  • Prepares materials and learning strategies for face-to-face sessions with learners.
  • Identifies, selects, creates and modifies resources to meet the needs of the learners with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Fosters a positive classroom environment in which learners are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
  • Participates in course and program learner satisfaction evaluations.

Community Support Worker Training and Mentorship

  • Provides orientation, training and mentorship to community support workers.
  • Suggests and provides resources and ideas to community support workers.
  • Provides in-class support to community support workers in classroom.

Community Liaison

  • Maintains relationships with referring community organizations and family members (in the case of family managed care).
  • Liaises with individuals and community organizations engaged in foundational learning.
  • Markets the Supported Adult Learning classroom and promotes Bow Valley College literacy learning opportunities to community referral agencies.
  • Builds and maintains strong community connections with adult literacy programs and disabilities serving agencies.

Administrative

  • Maintains well organized records of student files, enrollments, and waiting list.
  • Schedules and organizes learner enrollment and registration.
  • Compiles statistics and reports for funders.
  • Maintains classroom resources, and research and create new resources as requires.
  • Consults and plans with team members (ABLE Program Administrator, ABLE Instructor, Lifeline to Literacy Instructor).
  • Engages in regular supervision and program planning with Program Manager.

Other Duties/Special Projects

  • Follows College Policies and procedures.
  • Completes any professional development requirements.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree - with a focus on Adult Learning or Disabilities Studies.
  • 3 years of relevant experience.
  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered 
  • Police information check including a vulnerable sector

 

Preferred

  • Experience working with individuals with diverse learning needs.
  • Training/Courses or experience in working with learners with disabilities.
  • Training/Courses in teaching learning strategies recommended.
  • Experience working with people with disabilities in the post-secondary system.
  • Demonstrated computer knowledge and skills.
  • Experience working successfully in a team based setting.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills required.
  • Instructional experience in a related field or in a post-secondary environment.
  • Exceptional writing skills.
  • Highly organized.
  • In depth knowledge of a variety of disabilities and the functional impact of the disability on learning.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Be highly sensitive to issues of disability, diversity of population and confidentiality.
  • Problem solving attitude to approaching issues while exercising independent judgment and ethical decision making under a minimum amount of supervision.
  • Ability to work with effectively with learners and community stakeholders (advocates, support workers,etc).
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with assessment and placement of learners is considered an asset.
  • Experience with facilitating workshops and training is an asset.
  • Strong decision making, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

 

This is a project position until June 28, 2019.
